Hong Kong's Expo pavilions receive more than 3 million visitors ahead of Hong Kong Week extravaganza (with photos)

Visitors to the Hong Kong Pavilion and Hong Kong's Urban Best Practices Area (UBPA) Exhibition at World Expo 2010 Shanghai China (Shanghai Expo) hit the three million mark yesterday (October 13).

Commissioner, HKSAR Expo Affairs Office, Mr Patrick Chan, said the high number of visitors showed that the two Hong Kong pavilions were popular attractions for Expo visitors.

"I am confident that our two exhibitions will continue to enjoy high popularity as we enter the last two weeks of Expo and prepare for Hong Kong Week," said Mr Chan.

"Hong Kong Week is set to 'wow' Expo visitors with a feast of activities and performances from October 18 to 22.

"A star-studded opening ceremony will be held on the morning of October 20, and there will be an amazing array of performances by famous singers and Hong Kong music industry icons."

An ensemble of performances including pop, classical music, jazz, opera, Cantonese opera, as well as exhibitions of modern art and culture will showcase the essence of Hong Kong's traditional and modern East-meets-West culture, as well as the city's diversity and dynamism.

A highlight of Hong Kong Week will be the daily parade, which starts at 12 noon and will run along Bocheng Road inside the Expo Park's Pudong site.

Visitors will marvel at a giant "pop-up book" portraying Hong Kong scenes and lifestyle, complemented by a colourful troupe of energetic dancers, the Hong Kong Police Band, a jazz ensemble, cuddly characters from Ocean Park, and a mouth-watering display of giant food mascots who will bring popular Hong Kong snacks to life in a fun-filled way.

More than 20 events and programmes will be staged inside and outside the Shanghai Expo Park, bringing Hong Kong's Expo activities to a fitting conclusion as well as tying in with the theme of October for Hong Kong's participation in this Expo: "Creative City".

To echo this theme, the Hong Kong Trade Development Council will stage a major consumer event "Style Hong Kong" at the busy Century Square on Nanjing Road East starting from tomorrow (October 15) until October 19.

Nearly 50 premium Hong Kong brands will present stylishly designed fashion, accessories, leather goods, handbags, gifts and homeware.

And there is more.

The "Fashion Visionaries - Hong Kong" Fashion Show and Exhibition was launched on October 6 at Xintiandi Style and will run until October 28.

A Hong Kong Films Retrospective, featuring 23 acclaimed Hong Kong movies to be shown uncut in Shanghai for the first time, will be staged from October 18 to 22.

A "Hong Kong-Shanghai Mobile Film Exchange Forum" will be held at Shanghai Film Art Academy on October 22. The forum allows industry professionals and contest winners from the Mainland and Hong Kong to share experiences on mobile film production and discuss future prospects.

On the cultural side, a large-scale art exhibition "Legacy and Creations - Art vs Art" will be staged from tomorrow (October 15) until November 12 at the Museum of Contemporary Art, Shanghai.

"Danny Yung Experimental Theatre: Flee by Night" by Zuni Icosahedron will be presented from October 16 to 18 at Duanjun Theatre, Shanghai Theatre Academy.

Hong Kong Week will come to a rousing conclusion with the Hong Kong Sinfonietta's presentation of Igor Stravinsky's "A Soldier's Story" at the Shanghai Oriental Art Center on the night of October 22.

Hong Kong's performance programme for Expo ends on a high note on October 23, with the "East Asia All Stars Concert Shanghai 2010" that will bring together more than 30 well-known artists and groups from Hong Kong, the Mainland and overseas for a not-to-be-missed concert.
