Police Band thrills the Shanghai crowds in Hong Kong Week prelude (with photos)

The Hong Kong Police Band proved a huge hit in Shanghai today (October 16) with a parade down Nanjing Road and a concert at Century Square in a stirring prelude to an action-packed programme for Hong Kong Week at Expo 2010 Shanghai China (Shanghai Expo).

The Band attracted thousands of spectators in the Nanjing Road East pedestrian mall as it marched to the beat of pipe, military and even pop music.

To the delight of the crowd, the Band stopped briefly for a rendition of the popular Korean song 'Nobody' which provided an opportunity for ample photo opportunities with the popular pipe band contingent resplendent in their traditional tartan attire.

The Band continued down Nanjing Road surrounded by an admiring throng who followed in their footsteps waving, smiling and cheering.

At Century Square, the Band took to the stage for a 20-minute concert as part of the Style Hong Kong exhibition being held by the Hong Kong Trade Development Council until October 19.

The Police Band was delighted by the turnout and enthusiastic reception, waving to the crowd in between musical duties and posing for photos at the start and end of their parade.

"We are happy and proud to be representing Hong Kong in Shanghai during the Expo period," said Band leader Superintendent James Leung.

"We received a great reception in Shanghai today for what was the first major performance of our week-long Expo programme.

"We will be playing in Nanjing Road again tomorrow for Style Hong Kong, and then heading to the Expo Park on Monday for Hong Kong Week.

"We are looking forward to leading the way for the Hong Kong Week Parade and our four concerts at Celebration Square on Monday and Tuesday.

"We are honoured to have had this opportunity to take part in Expo and to introduce to Shanghai audiences the versatility and professionalism of the Hong Kong Police Band."

Hong Kong Week at Expo starts the day after tomorrow (October 18) and will run until October 22.
