Hong Kong Chinese Orchestra Concert

Date: May 15
Time: 7:30pm
Venue: Shanghai Concert Hall

“It was as fascinating to see the orchestra as it was to hear it.” —The New York Times

“Radiating from Hong Kong. Empowering Chinese Music in the World.”

In this stirring performance, the Hong Kong Chinese Orchestra plays a selection of highly acclaimed compositions from different parts of China. Led by Yan Huichang, a National Class One Conductor, the orchestra is joined by renowned Japanese violinist Akiko Suwanai and pipa virtuoso Wong Chi-ching.

Works include Three Melodies of West Yunnan by internationally recognized composer Guo Wenjing; pipa and orchestral piece A Thousand Sweeps by Hong Kong composer Law Wing-fai, with Wong Chi-ching on pipa; and violin concerto The Butterfly Lovers by He Zhanhao and Chen Gang, arranged by Ng Tai-kong. The lilting tune of The Butterfly Lovers, which holds a special place in music aficionados’ hearts, is brought to life by Akiko Suwanai. The programme ends with Cheng Dazhao’s The Yellow River Capriccio, in which the audience joins in to create a rousing finale.
