Extensive application of technology advances Hong Kong's development as smart city (with photos)

Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) and Public Key Infrastructure (PKI) technologies are applied extensively in Hong Kong city life. If the industry can capitalise on the great business opportunities and enhance effectiveness in research and commercialisation work, it will definitely add momentum to Hong Kong's development as a smart city.

The Permanent Secretary for Commerce and Economic Development (Communications and Technology), Miss Elizabeth Tse, made the above remarks at the Hong Kong Smart City+ Forum in Shanghai today (October 21).

"RFID and PKI technologies have become an integral part of our lives, changing significantly our way of living. Thanks to them, we can enjoy the convenience of using e-channels at immigration control points with a Smart Identity Card, while the luggage handling system at Hong Kong International Airport is highly efficient yet error-free. Smart cards are also used to verify access to residential buildings and to keep track of students' activities in schools,” Miss Tse said.

"All these examples illustrate that RFID and PKI technologies offer enormous business opportunities for further exploring," she added.

Hong Kong Smart City+ Forum is the flagship event of Hong Kong's UBPA Exhibition at Expo 2010 Shanghai China and one of the programmes of Hong Kong Week. Industry pioneers and experts from Hong Kong and the Mainland spoke on the application of RFID and PKI in different areas. They included the Head of the IT Bureau for Shanghai Expo, Mr Zhou Weidong, and the Executive Director and Head of Personal Banking of Hang Seng Bank, Mr William Leung.

The forum is co-organised by GS1 Hong Kong and Hong Kong Public Key Infrastructure Forum Limited with government sponsorship. An award presentation ceremony for the Hong Kong Smart City+ Award was held after the forum to recognise the contributions by Hong Kong enterprises and organisations to developing and applying RFID and PKI technologies.
